Filter Transformations, Star Colours and Dust Reddening
SkyMapper filters differ significantly from SDSS or PanSTARRS filters. Not only has SkyMapper split the u-band into an ultraviolet (u) and a violet (v) filter, but also the other bands have different efficiency curves. Transforming photometry from one filter system into another rests on knowing the relevant parts of an object's spectrum. In the absence of full spectral information, photometry-to-photometry transformation is reasonably safe for stars of spectral type F and G and luminosity class V and IV (main-sequence and sub-giant), while other types of stars show variety in colour terms that depend on metallicity and surface gravity.
A general transformation should start with dereddening of the SkyMapper photometry, followed by identifying the correct star type and applying the transformation, and finally re-reddening the resulting magnitudes in the target filter system. Indeed, our zeropoint calibration for DR1 (based on APASS) has used exactly this procedure going from APASS photometry of F and G stars to SkyMapper photometry, whereby each star was transformed using a Bayesian integration considering all possible FG IV/V types. More recent data releases have used alternative procedures to calibrate the SkyMapper bandpasses directly.
Below we provide the bandpass absorption coefficients Rband for use in Aband = Rband x E(B-V)SFD assuming a Fitzpatrick et al. 1999 reddening law. These values are consistent with findings in the literature. Note, that Casagrande et al. (2019) and Huang et al. (2019) list ~15% larger Rband values for use in Aband = Rband x 0.86 x E(B-V)SFD, which means they are still consistent.
However, be aware that at low reddening there are strong indications of non-linearities or other unexplained features, that may lead to biases in E(B-V) of up to 0.03, see e.g. Wolf (2014). The E(B-V) value from Schlegel et al. (1998) is listed per star in the ebmv_sfd column of the master table. Also note, that reddening could always be overestimated as many stars reside in front of the absorbing dust.

Below we provide the AB colours in the SkyMapper, SDSS primed, PanSTARRS, DES and Gaia system as well as cross-terms linked via the SDSS unprimed g-band ('sg'). If you only know the colour of a star but not its spectral type and metallicty, we recommend using only stars of type FG and class IV or V as their colour terms have low scatter as a function of colour. Colour indices are labelled XAmYB for filter A in system X minus filter B in system Y, where bandpasses include SkyMapper ('sm') {u,v,g,r,i,z}, SDSS primed ('sp') {u,g,r,i,z}, PanSTARRS ('ps') {g,r,i,z,y}, DES ('d') {u,g,r,i,z,y} and GAIA ('g') {bp,g,rp}. We also include the colour index NUVGALEX-uSM in the column gnmsmu. Based on the stellar spectral library from Pickles (1998).

There are two columns for SkyMapper u-band, referring to airmass 1 (“u”) and airmass 2 (“u20”). These differ because the u-band has a read leak, and atmospheric extinction reduces the throughput of the main filter transmission, while hardly reducing the throughput of the leak.
